Satisfactory end to the “SAVIA: For a good beginning” project

With health promotion and disease prevention activities, the “SAVIA: for a good beginning” project ended, beneficiating 1.236 people with international financial funds of Caja Navarra Foundation and the Government of Navarra, by intermediation of the Compartir Navarra DNGO.
This initiative, which sought to improve the nutritional conditions of boys, girls and pregnant or lactating mothers in the municipalities of Turbo and Necoclí has ended its execution stage, it will be accompanied for three months more by the project’s technicians and professionals, as an added value the Bureau will offer through its Service Unit in Urabá, the entity responsible for managing and executing this initiative.  This decision is due to the need to study in more depth the different beneficiary subjects including sustainability of the productive plots, conflict resolutions, gender equality as a transversal axis for strengthening families and societies, and referring people to institutions that render social services and health care.

Some highlights of the immediate results achieved by the project are:
  • 95% of the population of children under 5 and pregnant and lactating mothers in the municipalities of Turbo and Necocli received vaccination and treatment for parasites.  This percentage hadn’t been attained in these locations for a number of years.
  • Over 400 people benefited directly and indirectly from the productive plots of land.
  • Conviction from the community regarding the importance and the capacity they have to grow crops to support themselves and for the sale of agricultural products, as well as pig and fish farming and marketing in optimal and healthy sanitary conditions.
  • Recovery of the self-esteem of women benefited by the project, which translates into better relationships with their partner, restructured child raising guidelines, and improved interaction with their environment.
  • Contribution to improving the nutritional status of the project’s beneficiaries, thanks to health promotion activities and a nutritional complement that was handed out.
These achievements were possible thanks to the beneficiaries’ commitment and the alliances established with out international collaborators who trusted us through the Compartir Navarra DNGO: Caja Navarra Foundation and the Government of Navarra.  Also thanks to national partners including the Government of Antioquia’s MANA program, COREDI Educational Institution and support from the Turbo and Necoclí municipal governments.
