 COMFENALCO Antioquia is a Family Compensation Fund headquartered in the city of Medellin, Colombia, which provides comprehensive social security services in the Department of Antioquia, in order to offer a higher quality of life to all of its users, both members and non-members.
During its more than 47 years in operation, COMFENALCO has significantly contributed to the development and welfare of thousands of families of Antioquia, and stands out as one of the country's most important Compensation Fund. Today, it is the only Fund in the country whose entire services have been certified the ISO 2000 norm by the Colombian Institute of Technical Norms (ICONTEC), and by IQNET, an entity represented in 29 countries worldwide.
Overview
Comfenalco Antioquia is a privately-owned non-profit organization that provides services to the Colombian Social Security system. It is a member of the country's Family Compensation Funds, which are institutions of economic re-distribution and solidarity nature created by Decree 118 of 1957 to which all Colombian employers should register by law.
Comfenalco's main objective is to pay a monetary subsidy to the member worker who earns a low salary and to provide its members supplemental services to their family core and to the community-at-large, such as: Health Prevention & Promotion, Tourism, Education, and Cultural Fostering & Disclosure, Public Libraries, Credits and Housing Subsidies, Free-investment Loans, and Recreation and Sports-related activities. The State is in charge of its control and surveillance through the Family Subsidy Superintendence.
Today, the Family Compensation Funds base their financing from the contributions received from member companies, from the Funds' sale of services, and from the cooperation agreements entered with national and international bodies, corporate foundations and NGO's.
In early 2001, Comfenalco created the National and International Cooperation Department subscribed to the Corporate Relations Department with the main purpose of searching for local and foreign partners that will enable extending its service coverage to other areas of the Department of Antioquia and, specially, to the most vulnerable population, which often lacks social security as well as the State's protection and the most basic conditions to lead a dignified life.
Hence, this Department contacts similar international entities in search of strategic partners and new financing sources for local development programs, and although the resources of the Compensations Funds are limited, these are mainly aimed to serve the members and are committed to programs defined in the government plans of the President of the Republic. Today, the country's Compensation Funds display a high-impact social balance and thus, new co-financing sources to invest in development projects addressed to the vulnerable population that contribute to improving the difficult conditions of the social deterioration and violence that Colombia suffers.
The information below is a summary of our services, the regional scope of our work, the goals we seek with the international cooperation, and the portfolio of social development projects for which we are searching national and international technical and financial cooperation.
