COMFENALCO Antioquia and the MANA Program benefit close to 90 thousand children across the Department

With the goal of helping to improve the nutritional state and the eating habits of school age boys and girls across 87 towns in Antioquia, COMFENALCO Antioquia and the MANA Program of the Government of Antioquia joined together to set up the MANA ESCOLAR program with an investment of 8.593 million pesos. During 2007, this program benefitted closet o 89.600 boys and girls at risk from malnutrition, and incorporated the following strategies:
- Nutritional complements: during 2007 11.994.670 rations of food complements where handed out, and the community was sensitized regarding adequate eating habits.
- Nutritional follow-up and oversight: 100% of the participating school children were weighed and measured in order to determine their state at the beginning and at the end of the program and measure the program’s impact.
- Educational processes: 9 sub-regional forums were carried out aimed at parents, educators and food handlers in order to train them in adequate eating habits and healthy lifestyles.
- Production of teaching materials for schoolchildren.
Additionally, adequate hygiene and health practices were verified (Good Manufacturing Practices), for both the food and the the physical plant, equipment and materials, of the educational establishments participating in this program.
