   COMFENALCO, Cideal and ACI
join together in a Co-Development proposal

Spain is one of the countries most preferred by Colombians who, for different reasons, have decided to move abroad.  This situation has increased significantly over the past number of years and for this reason transfers from abroad have become one of the main items in the country’s Gross National Product.  Nonetheless, most of the resources that enter the country as transfers are used by the emigrants’ families to cover basic expenses and goods including public services, food, housing and clothing, and not for investment activities that could, in the mid and long term, become options for sustainably improving their standard of living.

Therefore, in order to channel these monies into alternatives that will create development possibilities for the families in Colombia and abroad, the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation –AECI-, CIDEAL, the Mayor’s Office of Medellín through Agency of Cooperation and Investment for Medellín and the Metropolitan Area – ACI- and COMFENALCO Antioquia joined together to promote the project for Strengthening networks of Antioquian emigrants in Spain for undertaking co-development initiatives, which seeks to involve emigrants in local development processes in their cities and in helping to put in place productive initiatives in their home communities.

The project, which will last for 4 years, will directly benefit 50 immigrant families residing in Madrid and Barcelona, and during 2008 will have an investment of 98.500 Euros for implementing the following strategic areas:
  • Strengthening emigrant organizations in Madrid and Barcelona.
  • Training emigrant Antioquians in investment alternatives.
  • Aiding and advising the families of emigrant Antioquians in creating and operating productive projects.
  • Transferring knowledge of similar experiences that are being carried out in other areas of the country.
